Mirror Mirror Poem by Mary Green

Mirror Mirror

Mirror, Mirror in my hand
Tell me, who is the fairest in the land?
Be true, and tell no lie
Lest one of us should fall and die

Reflection of mine, tis me I see
From the top of the head to the nips of the knee
Lie to you? , I wouldn’t dare
That surely would mean I didn’t care?

So here we go, my fairest queen
A vision in resplendent green
Your hair the colour of burning straw
Razzled and frazzled, and singed to the core

Your eyebrows continue to meet in the middle
With eyes like dark little pools, filled with piddle
Your cheekbones once so high and proud
Now sit hidden in folds, of ruche pink cloud

A nose once so perfect and pretty
Now perches on your lip, like some sort of zitty
Lips once so lush and totally kissable
Now drool at the corners, so sad and so missable

Most of your teeth left home long ago
Leaving deep black holes, with nothing to show
A chin that once clung so tight to your jaw
Now plays with its peers, defying the law

Layers of neck fall down to your bossom
Sweetly nestling like baby opossum
With elbows resembling soft suety dumplings
Your groaning clothes break out into soft gentle rumblings

As for your waist, where did it go?
For as long as I can remember I’ve watched it grow
And so here I am, looking at you
Watching and waiting to see what you do

Oh Mirror, Mirror, how cruel could you be?
Why O Why would you say these mean things to me?
Be mindful I know you, inside and out
And smash you I could, with a well aimed clout

So put you away from sight and mind
Is what I shall do, no longer to find
You see dear mirror, hurt I cannot be
For I remember that I am you, and you are me
