Modern Poetry Poem by Patrick Dennis

Modern Poetry

Out of the Egyptian bondage
of metre and rhyme
across the free wilderness
striking and failing for springs
erratic, servile, yet resistant to law,
no spirit, ragtag, hopeless -
gazing at last impotently across the valley
towards the Promised Land.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I can't remember writing this. I must have been in a bad mood or something. Maybe some poet in free verse - probably a good one at that - got my hackles up. It will help in understanding the poem if you are familiar with the escape of Moses and the Israelites from Egypt. In the end, despite their diversions and misdemeanours they made it to the Promised Land where flowed milk and honey - not Moses though or some others. So be careful.

If anyone accuses me of being negative or anti something I will deny it. And please, for mercy's sake, don't hoist me on my own petard.
