Mother

Mother1 1. noun a. A female who has given birth to offspring

What is a mother?
A mother is far more than a few clumsy words scribbled on a page
But I will try to capture her essence the best I can

When she gives birth
she is a soldier.
When we hit puberty
She is a saint.
She accepts us, she forgives us
No matter who we are.
No matter what we have done

Quasimodo’s mother
Called him beautiful
And she wasn’t lying -
A mother never lies to her child.

Never try to deceive a mother
because she always knows.
She is a mind reader
without the tarot cards.

There is a rope attaching us to our mother
And when we are far away
She feels every vibration between the threads.
Yet when she knows we are ready
she is strong enough
to cut the rope.
To let us go.

A mother will take our delicate dreams
and she will laminate them
so that they cannot be ripped,
so that the brutal World cannot leave his footprints on them.

Without a mother
A home is just a house.
She is the cement
that holds our lives together.
As long as she is around
The bricks are secure.

She is the hand that brushes the knots out of our hair
when we are young.
The hand that keeps hold of the brush
when we are grown.

A Mother isn’t a mere dictionary definition.
She isn’t just a common noun.
She is far more than a few clumsy words scribbled on a page.
