My Brethren Poem by ELVIS IBETO

My Brethren

Rating: 5.0

If you have a pair of eyes
That looks beyond the skin
And beholds the Divine essence
Within every race

If you possess a tongue
That extols the beauty
In every face
In spite of colour or grace

If you bear a heart;
A large heart
Pure and swift in compassion,
That holds none in derision,
But complaisant to all and sundry.

If yours is a face
Quick with a smile
To mend a broken heart,
A cheer to create and sustain
The bond of love and friendship
In spite of race or creed,

Then lend me your hand of fellowship
For you are
My brethren indeed.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was inspired by the internecine hatred that has become the infamous hallmark of our human existence, born out of racial dichotomy, religious bigotry and misguided tribal loyalty. It is dedicated to all those who choose the course of peace, universal brotherhood, love and tolerance.

A lovely and well articulated poem, written with insight to capture the conviction of the poet in his call for UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD OF MAN. A nice one indeed. Thanks for sharing. Please read and appraise my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
