My Country The Philippines Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

My Country The Philippines

My country is the Philippines,
Found at the center of Asia.
Corruption and idolatry are her sins-
And extreme Poverty is her dilemma.

Enslaved by the Spanish conquerors,
She was chained in the mind by religion.
She suffered abuse from her tormentors,
Until people were set free by Education.

Filipinos still wallow in slavery,
Religion holds their minds and their culture.
Superstition, amulets, and the statues we see
Are the gods who control their very future.
