My Flag Poem by Edwina Reizer

My Flag

The red I see should stand for valor
but blood is what I see.
The white I see should stand for pureness
but surrender is what I see.
The blue I see should stand for courage
but sadness is what I see.

Now the flag will fly
and I will cry
for those who don't see like me
that this flag we all revered
will go down in history
as a dream deferred
for the dream is blurred
so it's not flying for the free.

It's flying for a memory
of a dream we thought we had.
Instead the memory is fading
and it's made me deeply sad.
