My Life/Persian Poem by Baharak Barzin

My Life/Persian

Rating: 2.5

چشم بستم و جهان ویران شد
خفته زِ غم و هجران شد

چشم گشودم و مسیحا دیدم
مدهوش زِ عشق و دل و جان دیدم

جان من بیش از این هوشیار نیست
چشم من بیش از این بیدار نیست

The Persian script looks so lovely, like delicate shapes of living things, tiny creatures moving in a perfect harmony across their world which is paper and ink. It must be liberating for you to go back and forth between an alphabet of letters and one of such shapes. Dick Davis, an Englishman, has translated many works of Persian literature, and I must trust his skill. I've reached page 358 of his 800+ page translation of SHAHNAMEH, which has the same epic scope I find in Homer. I'm half way through Gorgani's VIS AND RAMIN, a compelling story of intense love against all odds. Many have translated HAFEZ who cannot read Persian and use someone else's literal version. But Dick Davis's versions are completely his work. He co-translated the CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS with his Iranian-born wife, and their version shines with poetic illumination. What a beautiful work. Attar was a masterful poet. I remember translating Chaucer's Middle English version based on a medieval French translation into modern English. Little did I know then that it would Attar I revere for his poetry and not Chaucer.
