My Own Reflection Poem by Rhonda Harris

My Own Reflection

Rating: 5.0

As I look at my reflection looking back at me
I do not like the woman I see.
Who is this woman who lies to me?

She came to me so many years ago
Promising always to protect my soul.
At that time in my life when promises were few
I looked forward to starting my life anew.

With this new friend that I had found
No one would ever let me down.
If no one mattered except for me
Then my heart would always be free.

Free from hurt, pain and tears.
She showed me the way for so many years...

As I look back now at the years gone by
I feel the tears well up in my eyes.
For the loved ones I've hurt and let down,
Just so I could wear my self-righteous crown.

Now the tears are falling like rain
As I take a long look in the mirror again.
Through the blur of my tears,
I can vaguely see
that shell of a woman she made of me.
