My Valentine Poem by Nicola Thoner

My Valentine

Calm ambiance

of the evening air

Rain on the pavement

Grey skies

Supply me with a giddy rush

Of the full moon rising.

Lights flicker in the distance

A sign of hope, industry

pick one.

Pick both.

Dwelling in the suburbs

like mosquitoes in water

Sucking blood from the earth

as we rise.

We grow to take more

give nothing back.

Too afraid to stop and feel

for the fear it will burn us.

I don't remember what it feels like

to touch the ground anymore

living in the air,

never staying in one place too long

For the fear it will burn me.

And as I feed on the force of this life

It occurs to me

That if everyone is doing the same thing

The sound of suffering on this earth

must be deafening.
