My Wife Has Stayed With Me Poem by Shalom Freedman

My Wife Has Stayed With Me

My wife has stayed with me
I have not been the husband she dreamed
I have failed her in many ways
But she has stayed with me
And for this and for so much else
My gratitude to her is very deep

I must try now
Even in old age
To correct my carelessness
My annoying small selfish habits
And to be as good for her
As I can be

I have not been the best
But I must do the best for her
I can

I must do my best
To make our final years
As good as they can be

I did not do the best
I do not know do the best
But I must for her
For both of us
Do better.
