Never Should Have Poem by Courtney Casebolt

Never Should Have

I woke up this morning
After a long, long night
You held me so close
You held me so tight
I thought everything was fine
But when I saw daylight
I remembered that you were never mine
Chorus
I never should have fallen in love with you
I don’t know what I got myself into
I find myself missin’ you every hour of every day
Wish I could hold you while you’re away
I never should have fallen in love with you
If I had known someone else would’ve won
& that ‘we’ never could’ve been ‘us’
I would’ve survived on my own
I never should have fallen in love with you
*
Now don’t get me wrong
It’s not you that I regret
It was our love that was lost
While I was lying in bed
When your late night call
Broke my heart
You told me ‘you found someone new’
But she’ll never love you like I do
& it was then that I realized the truth
Chorus
It was never like you to lie
So why couldn’t you tell me
Before I laid awake with dryin’ eyes
That I was all you’d ever need?
