Never Turn Twenty-Three Poem by Jade Leven

Never Turn Twenty-Three

they're looking at him, admiring him, wishing they were him
and I'm looking at you, thinking that's great for you, your dreams are coming true
I'm sorry if I'm ungrateful in your presence sometimes
but don't worry, or those beautiful eyes will be scarred with tired lines

he'll take you away to a place where you can smile endlessly
and you'll believe your life is finally complete
and the moonlight will hit your face just right
and he'll hold you tight, and you'll sing into the night,
who am I to fall in love!

I cherish these days, I'll remember these days, I'll miss these days
but in eight years, eight life-changing years, will you forget these years?
I'd hold you close, if I could, believe me, I would
but sometimes I can't tell the bad from the good

I know you'll be different at age twenty-three
but you'll still be special to me
I hope you keep your heart protected
from anything that could change who you are
don't be something you're not, don't wander too far

I had a dream that you were close to me
and until I woke up, I believed my life was finally complete
and the moonlight, it hit your face just right
and you held me tight, and I sang into the night,
who am I to fall in love!
