Nightmare In The Morning Poem by Amelia Patterson

Nightmare In The Morning

Nightmarish fiends surround me as I run down the hall.
FASTER! FASTER!
GO LEFT! NO, GO RIGHT!
My mind argues as my head swirls in a vortex of darkness.
I go right.
It's getting harder to run
as I carry a sledgehammer
down
what seems to be a mansion of darkness.
A glint catches
the corner of my left eye
I quickly stop.
A window!
Darn!
It's barred!
The sledgehammer!
I raise the tool
high above my head
and strike with one fatal blow.
CRASH!
Shards of glass fly at me
as I protect my face with my sleeve.
A ray of light
flings itself
through the newfound opening.
Fog flows in with its eerie presence.
WAKE UP!
My eyes flash open
and stare at the blank cieling above me.
I look to my left,
the clock claiming it's only 2: 00 A.M.
