Not Obligated To Need Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Not Obligated To Need

Where was I.
When you began,
To end.
What we started together.
And,
Where were you.
Without me knowing,
This is what you chose to do.
And all I did was my best,
To smile all the time for you.
Wanting more to give and get,
Your approval to receive.

Proving what I now believe,
What was rumored had been true.
Although you lied.
And I refused to accept,
You were expressing unhappiness.
As I kept my own faked.
To think that was what you wanted.

Why didn't you tell me,
What you showed and felt to feel...
Was becoming too unreal to bear.
Maybe I should have stayed,
Being that person you met.
To want! And not obligated to need!
