Nothing Poem by Adrienne Gagne

Nothing

Rating: 5.0

To me, the word “nothing” is nonexistent
Because even nothing is something

They say that air is nothing
But the essence of air
contains billions and billions of atoms
dancing around the jet black sky

He says he is thinking of nothing
But nothing is simply a calm state of mind
A feeling of relaxation and lack of concentration
I assure you he is thinking of something
However unimportant it may seem

Some say a sheet of paper
marking the date of a newfound marriage
means nothing
But for others it provides a sense of proof
Proof that two people’s love for each other is defined
even by splotched ink on an old page
Words can never be seen as nothing.

The poor man on the street says he has nothing
But he has a beating heart
And a tongue that could be used to vocalize
his frustration and misfortunes
If the man wanted to,
he could move mountains with those two tools
That right there, is something.

It’s said that after death
There is nothing
And this is where my knowledge regarding
the word “nothing” ends
Because I have never been to the other side

But if we make something of our lives
Fill those empty spaces with
laughter, love, and success
Then death can’t possibly be viewed
as a dark spiral leading to nothingness
Just the first page of a new chapter.

See, what I have just created is hope.
And that right there,
is something.
