Old Bones Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Old Bones

Old man sat on a bench
In the park
Feeding pigeons
Bread from sandwiches.

Happy children playing
On swings and roundabouts
Parents watching
Hearts full of love and hope.

Old man remembers
Wife and children
Long dead and buried
House bombed in the war.

Came home on leave
Young soldier, from overseas
Found home reduced to rubble
Never to see his family again.

Now, old bones
Never took another wife
But mourned broken hearted
Enduring passing years.

Smiles, hearing in his mind
Voices of the dead
Tearfully whispers
"You are enshrined in my heart."
