On Seeing Red Rumped Parrots Poem by Francis Duggan

On Seeing Red Rumped Parrots

Ornithologists seldom talk about them and little written of them for to read
Males mostly green with some yellow in their unders and red rumps they search on the ground for their seed
Their common name is red rumped parrot birds one does not see every day
They live in their own small groups inconspicuous in their own quiet way
Not celebrated amongst the birds of Australia and of their ways few seem to know
But I find them interesting to look at and my wonder of them only grow
They never do soar like the raptors on calm and sunny days in the sky
Except when they are travelling distance quite close to the ground they do fly
Never seen symbols of them on any coat of arms and do not know of any football club that carries their name
And though in their quiet ways quite distinctive they remain as strangers to fame
They spend most of their days near where trees are searching for insects and seeds on the ground
I've only ever seen them in small groups in large numbers they don't seem to abound
Small parrots interesting to observe inconspicuous in their quiet way
The females and juvenile distinct from the males in their drab feathers of green to gray.
