'Once' Poem by Stanley Joseph Vinet Jr. Vinet

'Once'

Once the sun shone because of you;
Once the birds did fly for you;
Once the night was warm & wet with you.
Now the nights are cold and dark;
Now the birds hide from the dark;
Now the sun light is dead and dark.
You've gone away but left so much behind.
Like a sickness I cannot purge.
Like a madness without words.
Like a darkness in my heart does surge.
I wait for this to run its course;
But oh dear God I'm all out of sorts;
The Devil knows the promise of forever isn't really that short...
Ages ago I swore to give u my last breath;
But now I just wish for yours to cease!
Where I once promised to lay down my life;
I'd shed no tears if yours were gone this very night!
Would that take the sickness from my soul? !
Would that drive the madness from my mind! ?
Would that send the darkness from my heart? !
No. No, I could never wish you harm...
Not in my sadness, not in my despair, not in my loneliness of days.
Just be gone with all of you...
