Our Little Paradise Poem by Leonard Sims

Our Little Paradise

We all wish to live in paradise
Where all our hope and happiness lies
Where all our dreams we’ll plan and pursue
The good life to us humans is due.

Our paradise may be small
It is a home that we can call
Exclusive for a few people
Of love we try to make it full.

Our little paradise, we want it big
Everyday we labor, for gold we dig
If by hard work we don’t get rich
By cheating it sure can be reached.

Our little paradise, we do make it pretty
As an expression of love for our family
Lots of new things for our kids and ourselves we buy
And to our out of fashion junks we say: good bye.

Our little paradise, we fill it with stuff
Everything, you name it, there’s just no enough
From toys and gadgets to cars and extra houses
Oh! It’s so tempting, these modern conveniences.

In our little paradise, getting possessions is passion
It’s our best way of gaining attention and recognition
Make it to the top; that is our human desire
We’re so proud when at us people look and admire.

In our little paradise, life’s like in a cocoon
The world outside is a mess, a big disaster soon
Should we change our life style? No! Out of the question
The pleasure of our possessions is our addiction.

Our little paradise will soon explode in number
So many will be rich consumers the world over
Our savior, capitalism and modern technology
Promises to produce everything in any quantity.

It’s sad we’re led to believe in a false ideology
An unlimited growth and consumption economy
Corporations driven by greed changed us forever
Our civilization today, the most wasteful ever.

And we thought happiness is material abundance
Turned our faith to technology without reluctance
This car of technology is now going so fast and wild
And behind the wheel is an inexperienced driver, a child.

So, yes, in our little paradise, too much we consume
Human responsibilities too little we assume
The earth’s resources we just squander
Even our future is now in danger!

When shall we realize?
We’re causing the demise
Of the great human paradise
Heaven, that is yet to arise.
