Persistence

“Water, water! ”
She rasps
Reaching into the blazing flames
Feeling the scalding on her hand
She reaches further into the inferno
As she longs for the water behind her
Pulling herself further and further from her true need
She thirsts for the burning excitement of the flames
Yet hungers for the quenching cool of the water
But as she pulls herself into the fire
She knows she will never drink again
