Posterity? ..... Poem by RIC BASTASA

Posterity? .....

you are sociable, articulate,
you speak and remember, you are both
a mouth, and
a memory, and so you keep albums,
black and white pictures,
everything that your dad wrote,
every piece makes you
remember
the greatness in us, of us,
all about us, and i say, all these self-serving
keeping, what are they for?

footprints in the sand... waves are eternally
erasing everything, the activity is always
covering

this is the origin of all that is new
fresh and beautiful, we give way, they all come,
we hide behind those furrows,

we are underneath the sheets,
we are the other last layers of those striated formations
no one digs us, we are buried,
some archeologists make the findings

(sigh) we are not what they are saying
how can we live for another 500 years?
tell me.
