Prelude

Every day that has passed
every thought dreamed
every word spoken
all that was yesterday
is a mere prelude to tomorrow.

All of history
is your past
no one else's.

Not reincarnation
no
the past is important
not for your having lived it
but as the means to understand
capture
defend
define your place today
and your
destiny tomorrow.

Poem of the Day

poet Henry David Thoreau

My books I'd fain cast off, I cannot read,
'Twixt every page my thoughts go stray at large
Down in the meadow, where is richer feed,
And will not mind to hit their proper targe.
