Reconnaissance Poem by Gary Winkel

Reconnaissance

Shadows loom large
breathing down your neck
screaming more is enough.
Shot down upon discovery.
Fallen senseless.
Everything is killing you
worth living for or dying
to meet you halfway
in your dreams.
Reconnoiter the ground running
away from the questions
at the distance making waves
between star crossed fury
and social harmony.
Candleglow. Candle burning.

Reach into the white
snowy blanket.
Sweep the ground
under sacred debris.
Clouds in the eye
crying cryptic tears.
The stones you throw
are the words and pictures you receive.
I know as much as you.
It will not fix
what is broken.
I should have talked
to GOD when I saw
his quivering rainbow
over twenty years ago.

I used to love
without navigation
into eyes and smiles
and sensual places
that now seem observed,
but untouchable
by this jittery passion.
Just skipping a beat
while worlds collide.
Just missing the first full kiss
while bullets tear flesh.
Spirits flying aimlessly, while we
build defenses big and small.
You reconniter funded.
I recollect free.
