Rhetoric's Fault

Loppers said
'Rhetoric makes verse artificial,
mocks serious talk,
and is suited only to the obscure or obvious
with metaphor
and to the light and humorous
with rhythm and rhyme.'

They then sought what mocked in realist prose,
thought rhetoric would prove IT false.

Practice has proved only Time
has a hope to destroy
the likes of Tolstoy.
