Ruth Poem by Supriya Choudary

Ruth

Ruth is a very interesting and important character in Biblical history. A young widow leaves her homeland Moab to become a support for her Jewish mother-in-law, Naomi. She says to Naomi leaving for Bethlehem that 'your God is my God and your people are my people'. Prophetically and amazingly a woman of foreign lineage is considered to be the matriarch of all Jews, the same bloodline of King David (harped king) and Christ (Messiah to millions as muse) . This was one of my first attempts at serious poetry after getting inspired from a friend's poem on 'Hermione' a character from Greek mythology.

Widowed the daughter of Moab at an age ripe,

Journeyed into the land of milk and honey across Jordan.

With a heavy heart and tears dried up to wipe,

Her gods and nation left behind with memories as a burden.

Naomi to her side, during harvest arrived,

Into an alien land with little happiness derived.

In the fields of foreign men, chose she to reap corn,

April was the time with misery forlorn.

Out of the crowds questioned a face, “who is she? ”,

Answered the workmen, “Ruth, the gentile girl”.

The man was Boaz, rewarded her with compassion as sea;

Risen in Naomi, a new hope to see a glow

in Ruth’s eyes and sheen in her curl.

Kinsman immediate being he, she was united with him in wedlock.

Praised Jehovah with joy the wife of Elimelech.

Happiest woman in Bethlehem was Ruth,

With a beautiful son to soothe.

Never leaves providence, a woman in deep despair,

On his chosen heathen child, God’s grace never spare.

Mother of multitudes; the race of Jews,

From her came the harped king and Messiah to millions as muse.

So nice. I thoroughly enjoyed the poem. Ruth is one of the noblest characters of the Bible. Kudos.
