Steamships, powered by propellers and combustion engines,
First sailed the seven seas in the early nineteenth century.
They gradually replaced the old, romantic sailing ships,
Which caught wind currents to progress on the long voyage.
Steamships occupied the early nineteenth century and were later
Joined by ocean liners with more powerful, screw-propeller propulsion.
Ocean liners offered faster transatlantic crossings to rich and poor,
Separating them into First Class, Second Class and Steerage on the 'Titanic';
Different social worlds which were sealed off from one another.
Most international travellers now fly in jetliners, some the'jet set'.
Jets have taken away most potential passengers of ocean liners,
Flying the Great Circle in a straight line, but subject to accidents,
Just as ships are, but not as frequently as in earlier times.
Ships offer entertainment at night and a blue-water pool by day,
So that ocean cruises are leisurely yet exciting for all ages.

I greatly admire your series on various means of transport now reaching sailing ships to steam ships and then to ocean liners with all kinds of luxuries. Traveling by air has been taken over by huge and speedier jetliners. Thanks for this interesting series, Michael, which also has a personal touch.
A very good comment, thanks. The most significant factor, I think, is how much jetliners have taken over. I have not travelled much in recent years.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
As frequently as in earlier times ships are sailed with wonderful memories. Definitely Ocean liners offered faster transatlantic crossings to rich and poor at that time. An amazing poem is excellently penned with respect to past perception...10
Thanks for your precise comments. There was class division on the 'Titanic', which meant that those in steerage were mostly trapped. It is amazing how much airliners have taken over in our times.
