Samantha Poem by Eli MorenoDrew

Samantha

I.

Samantha didn’t deserve to die.
She had too much going for her: High School, Girl Scouts, Junior Fair board, Mock Trial. She was really good at Mock Trial, Samantha was very good at Mock Trial. She was actually a threat to the county champions Southwest High School. She gave the meanest Pre-Trial in the Valley. Samantha’s family loved her, loves her. They still do. I bet they miss her dearly. Without Samantha, they aren’t complete.

II.

I didn’t know Samantha, but I went to her visual. My mom took Madeline and I to pay our respects on behalf of Southwest Mock Trial. I remember feeling like the odd man out walking into the funeral home. We signed our names and I actually saw people who knew Samantha and were crying. I wanted to fall to my knees and give every single one of them my deepest sympathies, but I didn’t for the sake of being stared at. We sat at a pew and watched a video of her. It was beautiful. I glanced at the open casket and I looked away. I just couldn’t look, death scared me. We gave our sympathies to her mom and dad. Her mom said something so beautiful to me.
“I just want to go home and crawl into bed”
I couldn’t agree with her more.

III.

Samantha scared me.
I’ve always been afraid of dying young, but seeing it makes me even more afraid of it. I didn’t know Samantha, but I know she didn’t deserve to die, she had too much going for her.
