Showtime Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Showtime

Ballet buns twist stray childish locks into shape
Flamingo legs of the young, the pink, and the pretty
Flex within pumps, and leotards and tutus
Pirouetting behind the curtain
Little ballerinas practise pliés and jetés
Leaping like gazelles with the grace of youth

Today they dance over the rainbow
To the starry-eyed magical land
Of the wizard of Oz

Time enough to enjoy the world
Of happy ever after
Today for an hour or two
Joy is centre stage
Each cygnet's an embryonic swan
Blink…and the moment's gone
