Softly, Gently Poem by Clinton MacDonald

Softly, Gently

As I look at me I can see
Softly, Gently I am dying
Little is left for me now
That has not yet been defaced with pain
The harder I try
The further I fall
Everything I do is to no avail
The deeper I look
The more darkness persists
Softly, Gently breaking me
When to God I turned
I found no light
No guiding hand
Nothing to carry my through
Long ago I turned away the help of others
And to myself I turned
Though, in myself I found no comfort
No light to make me feel
Anything more than pain
Just pain and black despair
To harden more a forgotten heart
Where hidden deep inside
A place where no light penetrates
Forgotten thoughts and memories
Hide behind this impermeable shell
To be forgotten among the pain and hatred
Everything pushed further away
As Softly, Gently I fade away
Softly, Gently I lay and die

Your phrasing creates the perfect mood to feel your images...and the echoing last lines remind me of Dylan 'rage, rage against the dying of the light' although obviously with the opposite sentiment...nicely done...Coach
