Soldier Unknown Poem by Elizabeth Zara Pagan

Soldier Unknown

The fallen within the gates of dawn,
Whose souls but late, have gone,
Now sink to rest, our patriot brave,
In a place where flowers wave.

This is my time to grieve the night,
Each silent grave until its light,
I thought not one, but each who gave,
Each life they fought to save.

On the tomb where the nameless solder dwell,
Known to God, for only He could tell,
Bears the words, 'Here rests a soldier unknown,
He died with honor, but not alone.'

I thought of those he had left behind,
His much-loved children, his wife divine,
I bowed my head, heaved a sigh and cried,
For the soldier who had bravely died.

Then a gentle voice before me said,
'The fight I fought, I did not dread,
The life I gave was not in vain,
For your freedom, I would die again'.

I thanked him for his courage and pride,
And for those of us for whom he died,
He gave his life to save our own,
Now lies in the tomb of the unknown.
