Sometimes It's So Hard To Say, I Love You! Poem by Denis Martindale

I remember the time I fell in love.
We sat there side by side.
My heart felt as light as a feather.
I looked at the side of your face and at your hair.
I listened as you spoke softly to me.
You had no idea that I had just fallen for you.
That evening I went home and wrote a love poem.
I declared my love in every single line.
I showed you the poem the following day.
We chatted for some time later that evening.
I thought that all was going well.
Not so, as the next day you crushed my hopes and my dreams.
I tried to speak, yet every word was dragged from my heart.
And now, decades later, I only have that poem,
To remind me of how just how much I have lost.
Yes, Beauty Is Upon You is that love poem,
And is still the poignant poem that it ever was.
Even so, how powerfully it reminds me of you,
And the children that we could have had,
But never had at all.
