Somewhere Down The Road Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

Somewhere Down The Road

Headlights on a two-lane road
In the dark of night
Far from city streets
Far from country lanes
Far from village lights.
Alone in unfamiliar territory
Uncharted roads
That lead into the stillness
Of the night
And the heart

Alone…
The sound of the engine,
Humming, humming
Like choirs of angels
Singing “Come Home”

Man
Seeking his destination
Beyond the darkness
Beyond the night
Somewhere down the road.

Seeking refuge…
Seeking the lights of a city…
To welcome him home
Somewhere down the road

Headlights on a darkened two-lane road
Driving to who knows where?
We think we know…
But is our destination there?

We must travel alone
This lonely road
As the twilight swiftly falls
Evening stars begin to sparkle
And we must go alone
Toward a destination….
Somewhere down the road.
