Soprano's Lament Poem by Kaitlin Van Zile

Soprano's Lament

I wanted to sing to you. I did.
With that look in your eyes and the sweet words coating your tongue.
It's all I could think about,
All I could focus on.
That melody looping through my mind,
weaving through lost memories
and broken promises.
It was there.
You were there.
And so was I.
But I couldn't.
My throat closed up like a rose at nightfall
and all I could do
was muster up a smile.
I hope that grin sang to you
in ways I couldn't.
I really do.
