Sovereign Servant Poem by Peter Eliastam

Sovereign Servant

The whole of Jewish history has proved
That Jews can be persuaded to believe
In anything – except that they are loved.

Can Israel, upon a skewed foundation
Imagine that the Godhead would become
The Prime Utility of His Nation?

Our Jewish King has stooped to bathe our feet.
This very hour, if we are observant,
He serves us through an angel that we meet.

And do we know His work in our pogroms,
Where unobserved, He died six million deaths
To give the dead six million true shaloms?

For thus the servant of the Lord has bled,
Exsanguinated in His people’s stead,
To sacrifice His life for Israel’s dead.
