Sports Day Poem by Raj Dronamraju

Sports Day

Douglas pulls up to the stop sign next to the elementary school where the kids are in sports attire running drills and getting ready for sports day
Douglas's minds is filled with chores not completed and violence also not completed, neither of which have anything to do with sports day
The banner is going up, it is yellow and filled with misshapen info only patient parents would bother to unravel
Douglas thinks of playdoh
As a kid, he would put it on a newspaper cartoon strips and pull it off and see the image of the cartoon reproduced
He wishes he could pull the face of life and have it display the image of a better life
But that is no consequence to the scurrying kids and the frowning nodding adults who are trying to get ready for sports day
And the young athletes form rows to jump over rows of obstacles and they might predict rain
Douglas doesn't sleep enough and he wished he lived somewhere else
The gardening staff finish their touch-ups of school lawns and fields
High five and hey baby, half-hearted and full of repulsing sadness
Self-pity and narrow adjustment, I can beat your time
Relay teams pass batons and the pressure is now on their teammates
