Starving To Pay The Ticket Poem by Suzanna Chevalier

Starving To Pay The Ticket

Some things in life are more important to me,
like having gas or if I have food because I’m hungry.
Now a cop walks up to me the other day,
telling me about my seat belt, but does not let me go on my way.
Instead he writes me a ticket which takes months to pay,
pay the court costs that have gone astray.
Meanwhile I’m starving and have not enough to eat,
while the system goes on without a beat.
Should cops put their time to better use,
like talking to gangs by forming a group?
Reaching out to the community as a force that cares,
people won’t be scared and they will begin to share.
Build the city from the ground up,
help teenagers from being corrupt.
Cops could use their time in a better way,
to help the city of Lake Worth grow healthier by the day.
