By Evening, we reached Pushkara.
The soldiers halted by the side
Of the great lake, where Brahma
Bathed and sages lived in penance.
Hungry, tired and scared of impending death
I was tied down to a tree, unable
To move. Their teeth and talons bared
A hound of soldiers stood guard.
As night spread its chaadhar, they
lit a fire, started to dance, drinking
Madhira. Through my deliriums, I heard
The captain asking then to keep quiet.
'Sage Vishwamitra lives in penance nearby
Do not disturb his peace, or that
Will be the end of life for all of us'
And suddenly silence fell!
........Vishwamitra, my matula!
........My hopes were rekindled.
Great E.S.Ji! Thanks for your notes and brevity. The story is coming out crystal clear. There is now hope in Vishwamitra - the maternal uncle. Let us see how the great sage is of help. (10)
Let us not disturb Sage Vishwamitra, who is on penance..wonderful line..Thank you Unnikrishnan.. but such a great sage was tempted when urvasi appeared in front of him, which means human are too weak to control our desires..
Yes. What you said part of the story. We have to understand that Vishwamitra was born as kshatriya, the ruling tribe. He was easily tempted, naturally. He started on his penance only because he was humiliated by Great Brahmarshi Sage Vashistha. He wanted to be a brahmarshi like Vashistha. He was always short tempered. Even after he was adorned with the title of Brahmarshi his temper often overtook him. The incidence of Urvashi occurred in this initial days of his penance, when he had not attained control over his mind. We should be thankful to him for that, because we got the beautiful drama Abhijnana Sakuntalam by Great Kalidasa, only because of him. hahaha! And here, I have written, Do not disturb his peace, or that Will be the end of life for all of us' And suddenly silence fell! - which again refers to his temper.
