Sweet Freedom Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

Sweet Freedom

The little leaf could barely wait for her colors to change,
By nature, it had been previously arranged.
Her green dress would be tossed gracefully aside
In exchange for brilliant colors she would wear with pride.
All aswirl she would spend her days in bright red and gold
As she played leap frog with squirrels, somersault with sunbeams,
Then getting lost in piles with other restless leaves, pushy and bold.
Of course, there would be no leaf prettier than she,
A lovely leaf from an oak tree spinning, turning with glee.
Up and down, soaring through the air, being chased across the ground
Then back tumbling and tumbling not making a sound.
The wind pushed and blew her toward the sky,
She was happy with this freedom without a care or a sigh.
The sun loved her colors and her dainty flare, and decided
To write an ode to her colorful carefree air, a falling leaf which
Joyfully stole away with the wind in enchanted soaring.
