Sweetness In Cakes Poem by Kumarmani Mahakul

Sweetness In Cakes

Rating: 5.0

Cakes made from rice flour are round and flat,
Few cakes are of jaggery and few are of sugar,
Pretty yellow oval sweet cakes are of green-gram,
After frying in oil these are seasoned in syrup.
Cute round flat cakes wearing sesame seeds,
These are known as arisha, special in Odisha.
Syrup oval cakes made from green-gram flour,
These are known as drakshya in Southern Odisha,
Very tasty cakes and sweets attract every person,
During special festive season these are prepared,
At home all family members eagerly take these.
But in our Southern part of State in Silk City,
In the city named Brahmapur these are prepared daily.

These cakes are famous from olden days of
Ancient Kalinga Empire as far as we know,
Food culture is inherited up this modern age,
Today also we like these traditional cakes,
Sweetness greets us time to time in love.
Fathomless pleasure and fathomless taste,
The art of cakes carry for us in long journey,
Every mother in the State of Odisha is artist
To make Arisha and Drakshya with sweetness,
Traditional cakes are alive and going on live.

Art is part of wisdom and heart of creation,
Sweetness is brought up from nature to us,
God has created many crops for us and paddy,
We harvest in his garden and mill to rice,
Milling rice into flour and adding sugarcane juice
Either in brown wet form or in white sugar form,
Various cakes are made from rice and gram flour.
Sweetness of wisdom soul eats and taste is eternal.
Sweetness of cakes enters inside body and gives energy.

Sigh. My cake eating days are over. Along with cookies, candies, chocolate- -oh, how I mourn the loss of chocolate. I should write a poem about this but it would be so depressing==the opposite of the sweet delight abounding in this poem.10

Absolutely great verse, Kumarmani...I take this as an ode to traditions that also infuse thoughts of nostalgia. Cakes are sweet, and they are a reminder of how circumstances were.....sweet.

I assume that your partner is a great cook and you too assist her....! Usually men are ignorant of recipes! But you seem to be a master! The sweetmeats you both prepare and post are mouth watering!
