Ten Miles South Of Tel Aviv Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Ten Miles South Of Tel Aviv

Ten miles south of Tel Aviv,
Into reservoirs big as football pitches
Water pours from a giant pipe
Emerging from the sand.

Pumped to a metal hanger
This liquid harvest is a drought-destroyer
Salt water's rendered drinkable
Enough to wet the throats of many millions

Desalination plant, man's modern miracle
Israel's salvation in the Negev desert
Keep farmlands irrigated
Raises the Sea of Galilee

Ten miles south of Tel Aviv
Master recyclers: not a drop is wasted
God helps those, it's said, who help themselves
