The Beginning Poem by Terry Wiens

The Beginning

You entered this world so fragile and soft,
With tears in my eyes I held you aloft,
My being pulsed with unbelievable joy,
This wondrous bundle my baby boy.

Your mother smiled watching us two,
The love we felt radiating for you,
I smiled back with a twinkle in my eye,
I never realized how the time would fly.

I held you close with my softest touch,
Overcome with love I felt so much,
Your tiny hand wrapped around my finger,
I held my breath so my gaze could linger.

So helpless there in the crook of my arm,
My life’s ambition to keep you from harm,
To keep you safe and teach you well,
With pride and joy my heart did swell.

You’ve come so far and moved so fast,
My love for you will always last,
I’ve watched you grow and become the man,
Who now moves forward with his own life plan.
