The Dance Was Slow Poem by Elizabeth Shield

The Dance Was Slow

The dance was slow
Your hands were soft
As we twirl in the half-light
We speak of the most
Trivial things, and I wonder
If those were the things
You were thinking of?

I didn’t think
That you cared much
And to be honest
I didn’t think of you
At all, until that is
You asked to dance
My heart fluttered
A bird caught in a trap
And I said yes

I do not know
Just how you feel, about
The dances that you got
Or whether there was any
Feeling behind the question
I know that I am torn between
Thinking of you as a friend
And maybe something more
