The Drunks Poem by lee robin thomas

The Drunks

the drunks are thirsty
eager to consume more than beer
eager to consume themselves from each other
the drunker they get the more they make no sense
it ends up pointless to someone sober

yes I have been drunk and been the fool
but now I know why I choose not to drink
the mirror of truth is too harsh
I cannot go through another senseless night
or heavy headed morning
mornings are hard enough as it is

and watch them as they lunge at each other
drooling and spitting
shouting and fighting
dropping cigarette ash everywhere
spilling drinks
then hugging and sucking face
and that's the men

drunks think other drunks are heroes
they pat them on their backs
they cheer them on as they vomit or fall over
but a man who takes his first drink at 7am
or has to hide wine in the garden from his wife
is no hero

so drink up my fools
get so drunk you can't think
you hate thinking so
drink till you are beyond a fool
drink till you can't talk
and while you do
I will be writing or singing
I will be painting or reading
and when I am 70
I will look back at 50 years of creation
and I wont miss the nights where you slobbered around me
drunk

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
some say 'never trust a man who doesn't drink'. Drinkers say that. Sober people can drink any time but drunks cannot not drink. Who do you trust?
