The Earliest Flower's Talk
In March they knock at the door of Chun Ni
The Girl of Spring eagerly lets them get in
One hundred flowers contend for beauty
Wait, wait, which one stands for her heart?
Listen! Listen to the subtle voice of flowering
Don't forget me - Don't forget me
I'll sweeten your vernal lips, my name is
Forget-Me-Not - Forget-Me-Not
*in my language, chun ni (春妮）means 'spring girl'
This poem is striking in its movement from things observed by the speaker to the speaker being observed by them. On the literal level the girl brings spring flowers inside her house. But they become animate and demand attention, no longer passive Something without guile - sweetflowers - become almost, but not quite, sinister. I hope these flowers regain their innocence.
