The Faery Fort Poem by Patrick William Kavanagh

The Faery Fort

Tonight, I saw you for the first time after all these years,
You were the silent witness to my hopes and to my fears,
On dismal, late nigh walks, you shared my pain and tears,
A phantom in the shadows, reaching out across the lonely years.
A whisper in the trees, that never once, I heard.

NO! , not even once, - can I remember seeing you amongst these ancient stones,
Though sometimes I could feel a strange unearthly presence chill my bones,
A shiver running down my spine that I could not explain,
But here, upon the place I lost you all those many years ago,
I see you once again.

See the cross, I placed it here, in memory of you, bedecked with faded flowers,
I often sat and spoke to you for many many hours,
I never realised you heard, I though you’d runaway, I thought you never cared.
And now you tell me that you often came to see me,
And you heard my every word.

How could I grieve for you and let you go,
My childhood love who disappeared amongst the virgin snow,
No footprints left the faery ring, and in the trees I heard you sing,
But not a trace of you I found,
Though day and night I searched the faery mound.

Won't you come home with me? ,
There's still a fire upon the hearth, and soup and bread to warm your frozen hands.
You touch my hand, you smile so sadly, that at last, I come to understand.
For you have come for me, my love, to take me to that other land, amongst the Fae.
And we will laugh and sing and play,
And I shall grieve no more.
