The First Of Many Lessons To Learn Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

The First Of Many Lessons To Learn

With much thought of this to give.
And experiences to have lived them.
My blessing of life to receive,
Is to become a better human being.
As if obligated to fulfill this mission.

Who does what to others to do,
May remain for me a concern.
Yet...
From my perspective,
I am here to observe.
I am here to grow and learn.

How others treat each other,
May be a way for them to teach.
Who am I to say what is wrong or right?
I am not an authority of correctness.
Nor have I been assigned,
To police anyone's social behavior.

With much thought of this to give.
And a consciousness to self exam.
I know I am not perfect.
Nor have I yet to meet someone,
Who confessed they were blessed...
To reflect perfection.

Everyone born is a work in progress.
Born not to know,
How they will bloom and develop...
Into what it is for them to achieve.
And as for me I can only do my best,
To be a better human being.
With this done to prove to myself,
Respect to give it and to get...
Is neither an expectation or a demand.
But to know how it is earned.

This...
Everyone blessed to live,
Should at least learn that lesson first!
Without being forcibly taught.
And still,
For whatever the reason...
Seem incapable to comprehend or understand,
Why this lesson is important...
To stay understood.
