The Mother Sticks Up For Her Offspring Poem by Francis Duggan

The Mother Sticks Up For Her Offspring

The mother sticks up for her offspring to her young she is a true friend
Against the savagery of the lion pride the buffalo her calf does defend
Her love for her young no less than that of a human mother the mother and child the strongest bond of all
Of human and animal mums sacrificing their lives for their offsprings stories in plenty to recall.

When it comes to the lives of her children of her safety the mother she loses all fear
Of the bravery when their children are in danger of mothers we read of and hear
The mother burned to death in a house fire trying to save her young children she died
Is this not a story of courage and true love, can greatness of her be denied?

She dies trying to save her doomed children against the odds she was so brave
Yet her name does not live on as a hero the last post not played at her grave
Our heroes are mostly brave soldiers who gallantly died under fire
These are the heroes of the masses the heroes I cannot admire.

No greater love than the love of a mother animal or human they give their lives protecting their young
Yet they are not seen as the heroes and their praises are never sung
Their story does not sell newspapers in their honour there's never a parade
Their heroics are taken for granted the last post for them never played.
