The Nut Store Poem by stu aitken

The Nut Store

Sammy Squirrel couldn’t see
The stash of nuts at the base of his tree
And though he scurried up and down
He could never catch the thief around!

He thought he should investigate
The loss of his nuts at such an alarming rate
But when he confronted a passing Rabbit
It said “Stealing nuts is not my habit! ”

He thought that Mr Stoat looked sly
With a greedy twinkle in his eye
But when he quizzed him on the theft
He took offence and up and left!

He even tried to set a trap
But the thief wasn’t going to fall for that
And when he spied a fleeting shadow
It turned out to be a nervous sparrow!

Winter was coming and nuts were all he had
To stave of hunger when the weather got bad
He looked at the trees and it suddenly clicked
How he could stop his nuts being nicked!

He called to his neighbour on the opposite tree
I have a plan on which I hope you’ll agree
If we both pull together it will work out fine
I’ll watch your store, if you’ll watch mine!
