The Old Boot Poem by Lilly Drake

The Old Boot

Lost and forgotten
Half buried under the mud
My owner marches on without me,
His feet covered in blood.

My laces have been chewed by the rats
The aglets long gone
I look through the wooden slats
The bombing carries on.

The cannons sound like thunder
Blowing my soul apart
I taste the mustard gas on my tongue
It breaks my solitary heart.

My heel digs into the bones of the dead
My toe pointing to the sky
My hope is lost with my other boot
As I lay here to die
