The history of this chair goes back
A hundred years and more
But I’m so proud that it is mine
For it’s a family heirloom I truly adore.
“You will need to give it to someone
Who will take good care of it, for sure, ”
My ten year old granddaughter said
A girl with a heart so sweet and pure.
I know she is hoping she will be the one
To have it when I am gone
And perhaps it will be nestled
In her home where it may belong.
My grandmother bought this chair
At an auction when my aunt was small
My aunt died at ninety-four this year
But before then she didn’t hesitate at all.
She said when she had to change apartments
She didn’t have enough room for the chair
“Marilyn, I want you to have it now, ”
I knew then how much she really cared.
So I treasure this child’s old rockin’ chair
I remember rocking in it for many years
My heart warms when I look at it now
Sometimes it evokes happy tears!
You made me visualize that rocking chair & its guardian angel, your granddaughter. My grandmother handed me an ancestral brass lamp,4 feet tall, to take care of it after her. Attachment & responsibility are both reflected in this poem.....A sweet 10.
Marilyn, it is remarkable how old furniture becomes dear to our hearts and holds for us so many memories. Don't you often wonder who else may have sat in it and enjoyed it too, maybe a President or a Hollywood star or someone equally famous, or maybe just someone who rocked back and forward always wanting to be. Old furniture always have a history if only they could talk. Top marks and thanks for sharing this lovely piece with us my friend. Hugs David
